About Us

In 1995 Koenen Kennels came into being with our first Pomeranian, Misty, given to us as a wedding gift.  Misty’s first litter of 5 beautiful babies started us on a journey that would make us who we are today.  Our program has since grown to include Maltese, Yorkies and a mix of each breed (Maltipoms & Morkies).  To answer the questions as to which breed we love the most is very hard.  Each breed comes with its own special qualities and personalities that we just love.

We live on an acreage in the northwest corner of Iowa where we have beautiful views and a simple way of life.  I have grown up with some sort of pet, whether it be a cat, dog, parakeet or hamster.  When deciding what I wanted to do after high school something in animal welfare was a must.  When we received Misty I knew I had found my calling.  Getting to raise our 4 children alongside puppies was such a blessing.  Our children have grown to be caring, compassionate adults and I attribute a lot of it to our dogs.  They have laughed and cried right along with me through the years.  Now our grandchildren are continuing in their parents’ footsteps to help socialize the puppies.  Our young grandsons love it when grandma brings out the puppies!

We are a licensed kennel and a member of the Iowa Pet Breeders Association where we receive continuing education from veterinarians and dog trainers from across the world.   We pride ourselves in bringing you affordable, quality puppies bred to the breed standard and placing them in loving homes where they will give joy and love to their new family.  From day 1 our puppies are loved on.  There is nothing better than a newborn puppy to snuggle with!  They are also handled using Early Neurological Stimulation that was developed by Dr. Carmen Battaglia. Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), involves applying gentle stressors to a very young animal for short periods of time.  These simple interactions early in a puppy’s life may additionally increase its ability to learn and cope successfully with stress responses later in life. The stressors—which often include removing animals from their litters for short periods, very briefly exposing them to cool temperatures, holding them in different positions, and gently touching parts of their feet—are applied for a few seconds, once a day for 10 days.

Puppies generally do not leave our care until they are 9-10 weeks old.  This gives the puppy a chance to fully develop physically and socially to have the best chance at transitioning to a new home. They will have had age-appropriate vaccinations and several de-wormings. They will also have a complete veterinary health exam, and all medical records will be provided with each puppy.  We groom our puppies often so when they go to their new homes they are comfortable with nail clippers and brushing.  We also send our puppies home with a “New Puppy Pack” which consists of several items which will be helpful in the transition to their new home.

Unfortunately, we are unable to transport our puppies currently.  We will gladly meet you at our nearest airport in Sioux Falls, SD (FSD).
